I often see people asking this question, usually in reference to them not thinking they do enough. Some think they do not do any at all.
Maybe they don't take out ads in newspapers and on Tv, or in magazines, or on billboards, but they do make some effort.
Considering the outcry of the recent "I Found My Stuff On Some Web Site And How Did It Get There" threads, like on the oodle site, and the love2trade site, it has been established that Etsy does make some effort, even if it is not of epic proportions.
According the TOU (terms of use) here is one thing that they do:
The Etsy service makes it possible to post images hosted on Etsy to outside websites. This use is accepted. However, pages on other websites which display images hosted on Etsy must provide a link back to Etsy from each photo to its photo page on Etsy.
This is for your benefit, and to help get you sales, and traffic to Etsy in general. It sure beats blogging, blog ringing, and flickring yourself to death. It is free advertising for you. And since the web sites have to link back to your shop, your items are safe and secure.
Granted, it pays to be vigilant, as there are unscrupulous people out there who will take adavantage of people in a heartbeat. But you cannot complain on one hand that Etsy does nothing, then complain when they do. You did, after all, agree to the terms of the TOU when you read them BEFORE signing up on Etsy, as responsible people looking out for their own best interests do before signing up anywhere.
So, basically, the majority of the time, this is a good thing, it is free, effortless, and can lead to sales for you, and it is all done with your permission, as you gave permission when you signed up. If you have not read the TOU, I would suggest you do so, and the entire help section, buying, selling, do's and dont's, as you learn a lot there. Thanks, and have a nice day. :-)
